In the musical, two members of the Church of Latter Day Saints from Salt Lake City unexpectedly get paired together on a mission trip to Africa. While trying to convert the unwilling residents of the village, one of the missionaries begins to fall in love with the village chief’s daughter, Nabulungi.

Nabulungi is one of the first members of her village to consider converting. However, she does so more out of a desire to leave her village to escape the hardship of her daily life, in part due to a corrupt government official who puts pressure on her village. Meanwhile, Elder Price decides to give up on his dreams of being a famous missionary and plans to head to Orlando, where he originally wanted to go.

Left alone, Elder Cunningham doubles down on his mission to convert the people of the village. The end of Act I unfolds with “Man Up” (which resembles Les Miserables’ “One Day More,” further accentuating all of the characters’ individual journeys). The musical closes with “Tomorrow Is a Latter Day,” where Cunningham successfully converts the Ugandans and Price returns. 

The Book of Mormon has many great songs. Among the most popular songs in the musical include the opening number “Hello,” which introduces the main characters, Elder Price and Cunningham, who are wildly different. The tone of this opener sets the audience up for a continuation of the hilarious and irreverent performances seen in this number.

Other songs include “You and Me (But Mostly Me),” which samples Wicked’s “Defying Gravity” and includes both Price and Cunningham as they find out that they are partners and must travel to Uganda; “Sal Tlay Ka Siti” introduces Nabulungi as a main character and is the character’s first major song.
