Formula 1 History

The history of racing goes back to before cars were around. Horse racing was a popular sport early on. One of the oldest race tracks still in operation today is the Chester Racecourse in the UK, which dates back to 1539. Over the next two centuries, auto racing also became popular across Europe.

The oldest auto racing championship still in operation today is the Turismo Carretera in Argentina, which goes back to 1937. The story of Formula 1 begins in 1900, with the first Grand Prix being held in Le Mans, France.

In 1904, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) was established in France. Today, it still oversees all races worldwide, from the British Grand Prix to the Las Vegas Street Circuit.

Over the next several decades, interested parties got together to form championships and establish starting positions on the grid. In 1946, invested members established Formula 1 as an agreed formula.

Races under the F1 began in 1947, but the Driver’s World Championship didn’t kick off until 1950 at Silverstone in the UK. The F1 regulations continued to evolve over the next several decades, including safety precautions, the initiation of grooved tires, and three-liter regulations.

F1 races popped up around the world, first in Morocco, Japan, and other countries. The Formula One Teams Association came into being in 2008 to better represent the various F1 teams.

Even though the F1 race is specifically geared toward Europe, the race has billions of fans around the world, with each team having a devoted fan base within their respective countries.

The F1 World Championship competition has several drivers holding several championships. Some drivers, like Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, are the leading champions. Michael Schumacher was one of the best drivers, with seven World Championships, before he retired in 2006.

Lewis Hamilton became the youngest driver to win the Formula 1 Championship title in 2008 at the age of 23. Between 2013 and 2019, Hamilton won five World Championships. A year later, a new team called Brawn GP (now known as Mercedes GP) took home the Formula 1 World Championship title and the Constructors Championship in Morocco.

Sebastian Vettel won four Formula 1 World Championships in a row driving for team Red Bull Racing. Thought to be another F1 great on the level of Michael Schumacher, Vettel gets paid a whopping 15 million with the German team Aston Martin.

No stranger to crossing the finish line, Juan Manuel Fangio won 24 Grand Prix competitions, first winning six times in 10 races in 1949, launching his stardom in his home country of Argentina. He is now in the MotorSports Hall of Fame. Alain Prost won 51 races and earned several World Championship titles. He was the first French World Champion in 1985.
